On November 19, 2020, the PlayStation 5 was released — without a doubt, the main game console of the first half of the 20s. Sony console gamers are thrilled, Xbox fans are standing up for their toy, and PC gamers are still saving up for a new graphics card from NVIDIA. The rest are just wondering what the video game industry has prepared for them.

PlayStation 5 release date and prices

Sony stretched the intrigue for a whole year and only after the presentation of the Xbox Series X announced their event. On September 16, live on YouTube and Twitch, the gaming division of the Japanese corporation announced both the release date and the price of the console. On November 19, the long-awaited release of the console took place in Russia.

The first PlayStation 5 received gamers in the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. This happened on November 12th. On Thursday, November 19, sales started in the rest of the world, including in our country. Many have been waiting for the new product since September, when pre-order became available.

The new generation of consoles came out in two versions. The basic one, without an optical drive, will cost $399 in the US (a little more than 30,000 rubles at the exchange rate on November 19). The older console is offered for $499 (38 thousand rubles). In Russia, prices are even higher — 37.9 thousand rubles and 46.9 thousand rubles, respectively.

Let’s add that resellers have become more active. Some immediately after the release of the console sell it for 77 thousand rubles, there are those who are ready to give the PS5 only for 100 thousand. There are those who admit that they specially made a pre-order in order to sell the Sonya at a higher price.

Design

The appearance of the new “Play Station” has long been the subject of numerous rumors. But on June 11, Sony fully revealed the appearance of the console, which turned out to be uncommonly more refined than what the competitors presented. True, evil tongues compare the design of the PS5 with an air purifier, but such criticism is in the minority.

The PlayStation 5 has become the largest game console in history. The dimensions of the console, even without the stand, are 390 x 104 x 260 mm. Even the version without a drive saves only 12 mm. The mass of consoles has also grown — 4.5 and 3.9 kg, depending on the version. Interestingly, the PS4 barely weighed a little over 2kg.

Specifications

Although the design of the PlayStation 5 is very different from the new Xbox, the characteristics of the consoles are as close as ever. The PS5 is powered by an octa-core AMD Zen 2 processor clocked at 3.5GHz. The GPU is also based on AMD’s RDNA 2 at up to 2.23 GHz and 10.3 teraflops of performance. The fast standard GDDR6 RAM is 16 GB.

Regardless of the version, the capacity of the SSD is 825 GB. It is made using the fastest NVMe technology (I wonder how the cooling problem is solved). Thanks to this, you can download 2 GB of data in 0.27 seconds, i.e. game worlds will not switch quickly, but very quickly.

As mentioned above, Sony will release two versions of the console. The main variant will get a 4K UHD Blu-ray Drive, while the Digital Edition will be without it. Note that technically it is completely identical to the older version, which means that there will be no curtailment here, which is in the Xbox Series S.

If you look at the prefix in the analysis, you will notice a unique cooling system. The device has a small heatsink and two fans on either side of the board.

The next generation console thread shows the PS5 in disassembly, with the device fitted with a small heatsink and two fans on either side of the board. The visible part seems fragile, but the one on the other side of the board certainly provides the necessary power. The developers describe the new cooling system as “heat conduction loops passing through the printed circuit board.” They also promise silence in the operation of the console.

By the way, the PlayStation 5 will support 99% of the games of the previous generation. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan admitted this.
