Random access memory (RAM) is a necessary element in the operation of a computer, which is responsible for storing and storing temporary information that the processor needs to perform various operations. In English, RAM is abbreviated as RAM (Random Access Memory).

RAM is a volatile element that ensures the safety of data until the computer is turned off. RAM makes a request to the desired cell directly, without using other blocks. In the colloquial jargon of various computer systems specialists, RAM is simply referred to as “RAM”.

A little about the principles of RAM. Any computer has both RAM and ROM, that is, a read-only memory device, which is a hard drive. This is also a volatile type of memory, but unlike RAM, it stores all information even after the PC is turned off and there is no power. The central processing unit uses data from the hard drive to perform tasks. This information is duplicated from the ROM into a kind of “buffer”, which is the RAM. After changing the data and saving it to the hard disk, the RAM is cleared. The information in RAM is also needed for the functioning of other computer devices, such as a video card. Since RAM increases the speed of exchange processes between the CPU and the hard drive, the more it is, the better the performance of your PC.

How to choose RAM for PC

The speed of technology development in the IT sphere is great. Every year, leading companies make discoveries that improve the performance of devices, the performance of chips, while trying to reduce power consumption and heat dissipation during PC operation. Such innovations often result in new types of devices not being compatible with older generations.

As for the memory module, it must be marked DDR (double data rate), which indicates the generation to which the device belongs. DDR and DDR2 generation modules are morally obsolete, they can no longer be found on sale. DDR3 can still come across, but gradually their share of the total number of modules becomes smaller. Basically, preference is given to high-quality devices of the DDR4 generation. However, SKHynix from South Korea released an advanced DDR5 generation RAM in early October 2020. Another leap in innovation in the IT field. It is important to emphasize that the vast majority of modern PC layouts will be equipped with DDR4 RAM modules.

This is just the beginning of an introduction to the basic terms of RAM. It’s worth looking into DDR4 DIMM, DDR4 SO-DIMM and DDR4 DIMM Registered. So, the designation DIMM is a double-sided module, the full name sounds like Dual In-line Memory Module. This abbreviation refers to the form factor of the device. SO-DIMM stands for Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Module. It has a more compact size compared to DIMMs. Mostly they are equipped with laptops. DDR4 DIMM Registered modules are usually used in server solutions due to their high reliability. A significant disadvantage is the high cost. We figured out the abbreviations, now let’s move on to the main characteristics.

Memory size

Today, the minimum amount of PC RAM is 4 GB. It will be enough to run Windows 10 in combination with several applications. This is the simplest option, which lacks stars from the sky. 8 GB of RAM is enough if you want to use the computer to play games. Also, many programs will be quite happy with such a RAM. But a better option is 16 GB of RAM. This is enough for many professional applications. Also top games are close to such requirements. In general, this is a fairly balanced version of RAM. 32 GB and above — we are already talking about serious projects and highly specialized tasks. But if your budget allows, then it is quite possible to take such a volume.

Number of modules

Which layout is best? One 16 GB RAM or two 8 GB? Or maybe a variant of four by 4 GB? The number of slots on the motherboard plays a big role. Remember that dual-channel mode is more productive than single-channel mode. At the same time, the more bars installed, the greater the load on the controller. It is also important to know that you need to install your modules in specific slots to activate dual channel mode. Usually, they are designated by one color and placed through one.

Frequency and timings

One of the main characteristics of RAM. The higher the frequency and the lower the timings, the better the performance of the RAM. It is important to strike a balance between frequency and timings because they are interrelated. As one goes up, the other goes up. If the computer is aimed at office work, then you do not need to overpay for RAM. Another thing is when it comes to game models. Timing is indicated on the bar with a special digital marking, usually there are four types.

Bandwidth

RAM bandwidth is the amount of information processed per unit of time. In many ways, speed depends on this indicator. The measurement is in megabytes per second. This characteristic is indicated as follows: PC3-10600, where 10600 (MB / s) is the maximum possible data processing speed.

Radiators

Many eminent companies in the computer technology market produce excellent RAM modules. The fact is that RAM itself is a kind of “old man” in terms of the study and production of computer devices. Corsair, G.Skill, Kingston, Samsung — all companies have excellent hardware in their arsenal. Therefore, consumers have an extensive choice of the memory devices they need. Heatsinks don’t play as much of a role as other specs, since RAM is one of the most thermally stable elements.

Overclocking

The overclocking potential of RAM is an essential characteristic that indicates performance. The possibility of overclocking depends on the rank. That is, dual-rank modules are distinguished, as a rule, by a higher drain frequency. On the other hand, peer-to-peer modules are cheaper and more amenable to overclocking. Another significant factor during overclocking is voltage. The memory will require more voltage during overclocking, which must be applied to the chips. For DDR4, the recommended voltage is 1.4V.
