When it comes to choosing a laptop for gaming, we are faced with a lot of questions: what characteristics to look for in the first place, what is important, and what does not matter at all. The editors of the KP have prepared a rating of the best gaming laptops in 2022

The processor, graphics card, and RAM are important components in any computer. They interact with each other, affecting the performance and fast launch of games or heavy applications (for example, Adobe Photoshop or AutoCAD) on a PC. Some choose a computer for video editing, others for 3D modeling, and someone in search of a quality laptop for video games.

In this article, we take a look at the best gaming PCs in 2022, as well as explain in detail and in simple language the main components that you should pay attention to.

A gaming laptop is a fast, powerful, efficient replacement for portable computers. The difference between such a laptop and the “office” one will be in its gaming technical component: processor, video card and more RAM. You also can’t do without fast SSDs, a colorful high-resolution display, an efficient cooling system, additional external ports and amplified speakers.

Do not forget about the ergonomic appearance of gaming laptops. “Cut” corners, bright color accents and backlit keyboards — aggressiveness and a steely character that immediately catches the eye.

Let’s analyze the main differences between a gaming laptop and a regular PC:

Gaming laptop regular laptop
Processor (CPU) High-performance processors for games with high clock speeds (from 3 GHz and more) Standard processors for light tasks (1.8–2.4 GHz)
Memory (RAM) 16 GB to 64 GB RAM 4 GB to 16 GB RAM
Video card (GPU) NVIDIA Geforce, Intel or AMD Radeon graphics cards for graphics tasks Integrated graphics card built into the processor
Cooling system Multiple fans to offset extra heat Usually only one fan is installed
Image High refresh rate displays up to 300Hz Displays with refresh rates from 60 Hz to 120 Hz
Number of ports Availability of ports for connecting various gaming devices (USB 3.0, USB‑C, HDMI and Displayport) The main ports required for connecting conventional devices (USB)
Portability Heavier than regular laptops due to larger battery and additional components High mobility, light weight, compact
autonomy Short battery life (about 2–3 hours when playing heavy games) Battery life is about 8–12 hours at light loads (working with documents)

Based on the wishes, financial capabilities and gaming level, a gaming laptop can be divided into three categories:

1. Basic option

A laptop with an integrated graphics card will be a good option for undemanding users. It cannot be called completely gaming, but it does not require large investments. It is desirable to choose models with the following configuration: Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor, RAM — at least 8 GB, SSD capacity — from 256 GB. This option is suitable for those who prefer to play old non-heavy games (for example, Warcraft 3 TFT or FIFA 10).

2. Affordable gaming laptop

Key metrics one level up: Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 processor, at least 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB of SSD with the possibility of installing additional storage. LAN port (for direct internet connection) with high bandwidth.

3. Flagship gaming laptop

This version of the laptop will allow you to play any, even the most demanding game, without worrying about image quality, playback speed, cooler noise and excessive body heat. Moreover, he will be able to master various resource-intensive projects (for example, photo and video processing). These laptops must have at least the following specifications: Intel Core i9 processor (or later), high-performance graphics card RTX 3080 Ti (or later), 32 GB of RAM and a 1 TB expandable SSD.

The GS65 Stealth Thin is a fantastic all-rounder that still delivers unrivaled performance and design. It has a sleek black aluminum body with gold accents, but best of all, in addition to the thin 18mm thickness, the 4.9mm thin bezels of the screen keep the overall size of the body.

While it won’t do ray tracing, this spec is good enough to run most modern games in 2022. The GS65 has other nice touches that make it a great laptop: a SteelSeries keyboard and a solid, responsive touchpad.

The only gaming feature missing here is G‑Sync, but it allows for a lower price and battery life that rightfully lasts almost a full day.

Compared to the GSI GS65 and Razer Blade 15, the Aero 15X has a less attractive, sharp-edged chassis, but wins in the performance category with its larger battery. With nearly identical internals, gaming performance is also comparable to the GS65. The biggest difference, apart from the body and battery design, is that the Aero 15X can be equipped with a 4K screen.

The GL503VS comes with a regular (non-Max‑Q) GTX 1070 GPU. This results in a performance improvement of around 15 percent at a slightly lower price. It uses a previous generation quad-core processor, but that doesn’t matter in most games. The GL503VS also offers G‑Sync on a 144Hz panel without the option of using Nvidia Optimus batteries. So you shouldn’t expect more than two hours of battery life. So don’t forget your charger!

Even though they’ve only been around for a couple of years, Legion’s Lenovo laptops have made a name for themselves in the gaming industry, if only because they offer unparalleled value for top-notch specs.

If you’re looking for a cheap laptop to play indie or other less demanding games, the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series is a hit. The 7567 is equipped with the GTX 1050 Ti, a slight upgrade from the lower GTX 1050, which can be bought a little cheaper. Neither can handle the latest games at high or max settings, but if all you’re after is light indies, the 7567 is a great ultra-budget option.

As a bonus, the 7567 features a durable battery that should last over four hours, depending on workload. This makes it a great school laptop for young gamers.

MSI GL63 8RC should be the best choice for ultra-budget gaming laptops. It features an Intel i5-8300H processor, 8GB DDR4 RAM, Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1050 and one of the thinnest bezels on the market. The only obvious downside is the lack of an included SSD. The laptop comes with a 1TB hard drive, which means you’ll probably want to upgrade the storage pretty quickly.

How to choose a gaming laptop

The most important thing to look for when choosing a gaming laptop is the processor, graphics card, and amount of RAM. Consider in detail the optimal characteristics by which you need to choose a gaming PC:

CPU

One of the most important components of a gaming laptop is the processor. It is he who is responsible for the performance and speed of uninterrupted operation under heavy loads (the use of graphics programs, heavy games Hitman 3 or Far Cry 6). It is advisable to choose devices with a CPU (digital processor) of at least Intel Core i5, AMD Ryzen 5 or Apple M1. Also pay attention to the number of cores. If you plan on using your laptop for modern gaming, you’ll need at least six.

video card

The graphics card cannot be replaced or changed, so if you plan to use a laptop for several years or more, then you should pay attention to high-performance graphics processors. For example, on video cards from the manufacturer NVIDIA.

If you are considering the budget segment, then you should choose the mobile NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti and GTX 1650, as well as the 1650 Ti. These options will allow you to comfortably play old or not very demanding games. As for the mid-range, graphics cards like the RTX 3050 and RTX 3050 Ti are suitable, especially if you’re into esports gaming.

The next graphics card is the RTX 3060. It will allow you to play modern games at high settings in Full HD. As for the flagship segment, the RTX 3070, RTX 3070 Ti, RTX 3080 and RTX 3080 Ti are really powerful graphics cards with accelerators. In addition to games, it will be comfortable to work with various projects that require maximum elaboration of details (for example, Photoshop).

RAM

No less important component will be the amount of RAM. We recommend choosing an 8 GB or 16 GB configuration that will provide the correct performance for your laptop. You should also pay attention to memory performance, for example, a DDR4 module with a minimum frequency of 2666 MHz is required in dual-channel mode (2x4 GB or 2x8 GB).

Storage device

For modern games, a large amount of memory is important. A performance gaming laptop typically comes with a 512GB SSD. If desired, it can always be replaced with a more voluminous one. Usually in gaming laptops there is space for a second drive, and there is also a slot for installing a 2.5‑inch hard drive, which will allow you to increase the amount of total memory, for example, up to 1 TB.
