Achieving good indoor climate conditions is getting easier. One of the most popular types of equipment for controlling the microclimate is the air conditioner, or split system, as wall-mounted household air conditioners are often called.

The main purpose of split systems is to cool or heat indoor air. Split systems consist of two parts. One part of the unit is installed outdoors, and the other in the room. They connect through a hole in the wall and work in much the same way as refrigerators.

The principle of operation of a split system is relatively simple. The external block of the conditioner is mounted on the street, and internal — in the room or in the ventilating system of the building. The blocks are connected to each other by heat-insulated copper tubes.

Of course, the air conditioner only circulates the air in the room. To add fresh air from the street, you will have to buy an air conditioner that has this additional function.

Cooling or heating of the air in the room occurs due to the circulation of refrigerant (freon) through the copper tubes between the indoor and outdoor unit of the air conditioner, when the refrigerant changes from liquid to gaseous state and vice versa. The compressor located in the outdoor unit compresses the gaseous refrigerant, which heats up during compression and gives off heat through a heat exchanger (condenser) located outside. Giving off heat, the refrigerant passes into a liquid state, and then is transferred through copper pipes to the indoor unit, where it evaporates through the heat exchanger (evaporator) and cools the air in the room. In addition, a split system can work for heating, then the refrigerant evaporates in the outdoor unit, and condensation occurs in the indoor unit.

In addition, some devices have a dehumidification mode, when excess moisture is removed from the air.

One of the elements of the indoor unit system is a fan that sucks in air. The air passes through the heat exchanger, cools or heats up, then vertical and / or horizontal louvers determine the direction of the flow according to your settings. Thus, the air in the room is recirculated.

In many models there are filters for cleaning air flows. The air passes through coarse and fine filters, filtering out dust particles and other contaminants.

The power index of a split system is most often indicated in BTU — British Thermal Units. The most widely used models with a power index of 7 / 9 / 12 / 18 / 24 kBTU, or even 30 / 36 kBTU (kBTU = 1000 BTU). You can also see models with a power index of 22 / 28 / 35 / 50 / 70 / 95 — in this case it is indicated in kW (index = air conditioner power in kW * 10). The power of the air conditioner is selected depending on the size of the room, the smallest model is suitable for a room of 20 square meters. m or less, the most powerful — up to 100 sq. m.

You should also pay attention to the noise level. The air flow passes through many elements of the system, including the fan. Sophisticated aerodynamics can reduce the noise level of a modern air conditioner to 20–25 dB (A) — this is a quiet air conditioner (whisper of a person at a distance of 1 meter — 20–25 dB (A)). In window models, the noise level is usually higher — from 40 to 50 dB (A). For those who do not want to be distracted by extraneous sounds, it is worth taking a closer look at modern models with a noise level of 18–20 dB (A), such models are also among inexpensive split systems.

Komsomolskaya Pravda ranked the best split systems for an apartment in 2022.

Axioma ASX09J1 / ASB09J1 — non-inverter residential wall-mounted split system for a 25 m room2. This model is an excellent combination of affordable price and high quality.

The device will perform best both in the heat and in the cold, and in the off-season. The air conditioner works quietly, the noise level at maximum power does not exceed 39 dB — this is comparable to a quiet conversation or street noise at night.

The air flow intensity is adjustable, the air direction is horizontal when cooling and vertical when heating.

The split system has a “comfort sleep” mode that automatically regulates the temperature and a TURBO mode that allows you to reach the desired temperature as quickly as possible. The device is able to independently detect a refrigerant leak and restart in the event of a malfunction.

You can control the system not only from the remote control, but also via Wi-Fi, for this you need to additionally purchase a DW11‑B or DW21‑B controller and install the Daichi Comfort application on your smartphone. With their help, you can manage the device from anywhere in the world, set a work schedule, record personal settings, use voice commands. But the main advantage is that the device can automatically turn on or off when the owner approaches or moves away from the house based on geolocation data.

The outdoor unit is protected against corrosion, which not only increases the durability of the equipment, but also greatly improves its energy efficiency. The indoor unit is made of durable white plastic and is equipped with a built-in display. The silver ion filter purifies the air of bacteria, microorganisms and dust.

The manufacturer provides a three-year warranty on the product and offers additional services for the installation of the system — you do not have to look for craftsmen on your own and wonder if they will do the job efficiently.
In addition to this model, the Axioma J series also includes devices designed for areas up to 20, 35, 50 and 70 m2.

How to choose a split system for an apartment in 2022

About the choice of a split system for an apartment told Dmitry Batov, expert of the company “BRIZ — climate systems”.

To choose an air conditioner, you need to pay attention not only to the interesting features that you plan to use, but also to the power of the split system and the features of the room.

You can use a simple formula to select the power of the air conditioner according to the area of the room. The optimal cooling capacity of a split system will be equal to the area of the room divided by 10. It is measured in kW. For example, for a room of 25 sq. m. there will be enough air conditioning with a capacity of 2.5 kW. This calculation principle is suitable for most average rooms with ordinary geometry.

If you have a complex room — for example, high ceilings, panoramic windows, or a special purpose is provided for the room (it is planned to place a large amount of equipment or stay a large number of people), you should contact a specialist. For the most accurate calculation, you will need to take into account the height of the ceilings, the type of room, the number of people and equipment, the amount of sunlight entering the room.

Which split system to choose — inverter or conventional (they are also called classic, start-stop or on-off)? Their main difference lies in the algorithm of the compressor. The compressor of a conventional air conditioner operates on an on/off basis. It works until the desired temperature is reached, then turns off. In inverter air conditioners, the compressor does not turn off, but gradually changes performance. This allows you to efficiently spend energy on cooling, most accurately maintain the temperature and extend the life of the air conditioner. Another advantage of an inverter air conditioner is the lower noise level. At the same time, traditional air conditioners are more affordable.
