Cool­ing or heat­ing of the air in the room occurs due to the cir­cu­la­tion of refrig­er­ant (fre­on) through the cop­per tubes between the indoor and out­door unit of the air con­di­tion­er, when the refrig­er­ant changes from liq­uid to gaseous state and vice ver­sa. The com­pres­sor locat­ed in the out­door unit com­press­es the gaseous refrig­er­ant, which heats up dur­ing com­pres­sion and gives off heat through a heat exchang­er (con­denser) locat­ed out­side. Giv­ing off heat, the refrig­er­ant pass­es into a liq­uid state, and then is trans­ferred through cop­per pipes to the indoor unit, where it evap­o­rates through the heat exchang­er (evap­o­ra­tor) and cools the air in the room. In addi­tion, a split sys­tem can work for heat­ing, then the refrig­er­ant evap­o­rates in the out­door unit, and con­den­sa­tion occurs in the indoor unit.

In addi­tion, some devices have a dehu­mid­i­fi­ca­tion mode, when excess mois­ture is removed from the air.

One of the ele­ments of the indoor unit sys­tem is a fan that sucks in air. Anoth­er advan­tage of an invert­er air con­di­tion­er is the low­er noise lev­el. At the same time, tra­di­tion­al air con­di­tion­ers are more afford­able.
