The best water heaters in 2022

Progress in autonomous water heating systems has stepped far ahead. Modern devices that heat water look stylish, have ergonomic dimensions, reliability and ease of operation. We talk about the best boilers for heating water in 2022

When it comes to autonomous water heating systems, for many, especially older people, the image of gas water heaters from old Soviet films comes to mind. They, as a rule, had an unsightly appearance, took up a lot of space and often failed. But now the market is saturated with boilers of many modifications from various price categories. You can find from almost desktop (or under-sink) options for heating water for washing dishes to large 500-liter capacitive ones that provide comfortable bathing for the whole family. You can choose the right boiler for almost any living conditions.

Boilers are devices for heating water and keeping the temperature at a given value. They are divided into compact flow and accumulative with a water tank. Based on the name of the units, the first of them are installed directly into the water supply system and do not have a storage tank, and the heating elements are located directly in the flow of passing water. The design of the latter, on the contrary, provides for the presence of a tank of a certain capacity (from 5 liters and above), where the water is heated. In addition, they have different heating methods:

direct heating Water heating is carried out with the help of heating elements installed directly in the liquid volume. Or a gas burner through a combustion chamber through which a pipe with heated water passes;
indirect heating Water heating occurs indirectly with the help of an intermediate heat carrier, which transfers heat from a heating source (located outside the water supply system) to water;
Combined heating Both methods of heating are present here. This option is used to heat a large volume of water (from 50 liters and above). A coil with a hot coolant passes through the tank, and additional heating elements are installed in it.

Models of water heaters with several points of water intake are also produced. This term defines the location of the water supply system from which hot water is supplied directly to the consumer. It can be a faucet in the kitchen, in the bathroom or connecting a shower and a washing machine. In other words, this is the part of the system from which hot water is poured.

And, of course, modern boilers are equipped with reliable means of protection:

  • from overheating;
  • from excess pressure;
  • from corrosion;
  • from emergency activation.

All direct fired boilers are fitted with magnesium anodes to protect the body from rust. A mandatory attribute of the water heater are also safety valves and temperature sensors. The most advanced models are connected to a Wi-Fi module and controlled by a smartphone from anywhere in the world.

By type of heating element There are gas and electric boilers. The former heat the same volume of water faster, but they cost more. Yes, and the fuel consumption in the end can cost more than the consumption of electricity used in the second type of water heaters (especially if the heater is forced to work for a long time). The large volume of storage capacity (from 50 l) increases the efficiency of gas units. Also, when choosing, one should take into account the presence of a gas pipeline, the power of electric power lines and the cost of installation.

Therefore, more and more often, for the needs of everyday life in an apartment or in a separate house, residents install boilers for heating water. This trend is due to several reasons:

  • The presence of such units makes it possible to reduce the cost of hot water supply and heating with a comparable tolerable increase in electricity fees (in the case of electric boilers);
  • A person living in a separate house can set the time for seasonal switching on and off of the batteries himself if he has purchased a water heater that can be connected to the heating system;
  • There is no need to live for some time in the summer without hot water, which is turned off for maintenance work;
  • It becomes possible to regulate the temperature of hot water, operating the boiler in an economical or intensive mode.

An excellent example of water heating units with a power of 2 kW with several points of water intake has a stylish appearance and compact dimensions. The device is controlled by electronics, which includes a Wi-Fi module. This allows you to set the operating modes of the water heater remotely through a proprietary application on your smartphone (Home Comfort). In addition, the presence of a delayed start timer (up to 24 hours) allows you to program the heating to turn on at a convenient time for the consumer, and this saves energy costs. Due to good thermal insulation, water heated from 20 ° C to a temperature of 75 ° C does not cool for a long time in 114 minutes.

The ability to install in a vertical and horizontal position allows you to place it almost anywhere in an apartment or house. With an average water consumption (up to 25 liters), a 50-liter thin-walled stainless steel tank capacity is enough to provide two users with hot water. The magnesium anode gives additional protection to the tank against rust formation.

The durable operation of the device is facilitated by the design of X‑HEAT heating elements, made using a unique dry-type technology. The heating elements are placed in a special flask and do not come into contact with water, which prevents the formation of salt deposits and scale. A reliable protection system equipped with a safety valve prevents the device from starting without water and turns it off in case of overheating.

The automation system also has an integrated frost protection mode (automatic heating is activated when the water temperature reaches below +6 °C). On the case of the unit there is an indication of inclusion and temperature. The boiler is powered by a 220 V network. According to customer reviews, the boiler has thin walls that can leak and unreliable insulation of heating elements.

The durability of the water heater is ensured by a finely dispersed enamel coating of the tank along with the operation of an enlarged magnesium anode (compared to conventional samples). Protection against scale and deposits is carried out by the dry technology of installing heating elements, when they are isolated from contact with the aqueous medium by a special flask (Protect Tank).

The control of the mechanical regulator on the front panel implies 3 power modes without temperature indication. Operational safety is guaranteed by multi-level protection — it includes an emergency shutdown device, overheating and overpressure safety valves. According to customer reviews, the fasteners are of poor quality and require replacement.

A boiler with a storage capacity of 155 liters supplies consumers with hot water up to 75 ° C, regardless of its one-time flow and pressure. An open combustion chamber with natural draft (without a damper on the chimney) provides a useful power of the device a little more than 7 kW. The boiler works reliably at a reduced pressure of blue fuel, and the structure of the burner allows you to connect liquefied gas.

The water heater tank with a drain hole is made of high-quality steel covered with a thick layer of enamel. This ensures a long service life without rust formation. The presence of a magnesium anode also contributes to reliable protection. The panel contains a mode selection knob (7) and a piezo ignition button (automatically ignites the column at the right time), but there is no thermometer.

The power of this electric storage water heater allows you to heat water with a volume of 100 liters (such is the capacity of the tank) up to 75 degrees. Of the main advantages, it is worth highlighting protection against overheating, freezing and electric shock; safety valve; magnesium anode; dry heater.

A distinctive feature of this unit is electronic control with a removable Smart Wi-Fi module. This function allows you to control the machine with a dedicated application installed on your smartphone. So you can remotely control the operation of the water heater, set the timer and activate the delayed start option. A small weight of 24 kg will allow you to install this boiler without inviting specialists.

Perhaps the only drawback is the build quality — there are often models that are not made very reliably. Therefore, before buying, you should carefully inspect the product.

Another compact model in our rating. Due to its small dimensions and weight of 34 kg, this boiler is suitable for installation both in an individual house and in an apartment. The tank volume of 80 liters is enough for a moderate water consumption by a family of 2–3 people. Resistant enamel, which is covered with a tank, will protect the device from corrosion, which will increase its service life.

The burner of this apparatus is equipped with a gas control system, the design itself provides for an exhaust valve that removes excess pressure from the tank. Temperature control is mechanical. Another plus is the ability to work on liquefied gas from a cylinder.

How to choose a water heater

When choosing a water heater, it is recommended to pay attention to the following criteria:

>

>

Boiler volume

It is selected depending on the consumption of hot water for household needs and (or) heating. Small water heaters (10, 15, 30 liters) are mainly installed in the kitchen. Medium-capacity units (50, 80, 100 liters) are suitable for daily use by a family of 2–3 people. Large capacity boilers (200, 300, 500 and above) are designed for large families.

Storage system type

Flow boilers are much cheaper, more compact and more economical than storage boilers. However, they have their own significant drawback: the rapid cooling of water when the unit is turned off. Also, the water temperature may turn out to be low at an increased flow rate (more than 25 l). Therefore, for large families, it is preferable to choose the option with a storage tank. In addition, in order to quickly heat up a sufficient volume of water, a flow-through boiler of high power is required — from 3 to 27 kW. While for storage heaters, from 1 to 3.5 kW is enough.

Water heating time

This parameter becomes important when choosing a boiler, if there are a large number of potential consumers with a relatively small tank capacity. The heating time depends on the power of the heating system, on the volume of liquid that needs to be made hot and on the type of water heater, since gas heaters spend less time heating than electric ones.

Heating element location

There are two options: indoor or outdoor. In the first case, this is an electric heating element. It is placed inside a heated environment. In the second variant, the heating element is equipped in gas boilers or furnace furnaces, that is, outside the heated liquid. The choice of a particular type is influenced by many factors, for example, the frequency of use (with rare use, heating elements are better), the cost of fuel, its availability (for example, gasification with natural gas), volume and other factors.

Type of protection of the water heater tank against corrosion

The execution of the stainless steel tank of the boiler will reliably protect it from corrosion, but over time it can still form at the joints of the seams. Therefore, some water heaters provide for the installation of a magnesium anode. It neutralizes the aggressiveness of the aquatic environment and provides long-term anti-corrosion protection. In the end, a well-made tank made of ordinary steel, but enameled on the inside, costs less and will last a long time (of course, if there are no chips on the surface).

Installation fastening design

It is selected based on the planned installation location in the house or apartment. They can be wall or floor, horizontal or vertical. Boilers of large volumes, as a rule, are made in a vertical floor version. Smaller horizontal units can be conveniently and discreetly placed in separate niches or hidden in special drawers. It should be borne in mind that in horizontal structures, due to the lateral arrangement of heating elements, the heating efficiency will be lower than in vertical structures of the same capacity.

Expert review of boilers for heating water

Chairman of the Expert Council of the Eurasian Heating Systems Market Association Alexander Maslov shared his personal experience of using a boiler for heating water:

“I believe that the choice of boilers for heating water is the best solution for supplying a private house or apartment with hot water. Based on my rich experience with such units, I came to the conclusion that for each specific case, you can choose an efficient, economical and reliable water heater due to the large number of devices on the market. I advise you to choose devices of popular manufacturers that have already proven themselves. Pay attention to the quality of components and the presence of additional functions (display, precise temperature control, connection to the smart home system).”

Popular questions and answers

Answers to popular questions about the operation of boilers Alexander Maslov, Chairman of the Expert Council of the Eurasian Heating Systems Market Association (EURAROS).

How can you save money when buying and installing a water heater?

Significant savings can be obtained by choosing the right boiler. Ignorant people often install a geyser for hot water supply (hot water supply) and a boiler for heating. In this case, the customer pays for one more appliance plus its connection and gas project. At the same time, he receives a small amount of hot water.

And you should not save on installation, because professional installation is the key to long and trouble-free operation of the equipment.

How to choose the correct size of the boiler?

There are not very many criteria for selection: how many people will use the water, the number of water points and the type of installation (floor or wall). According to these criteria, the volume and performance of the boiler is selected.

For example, a 100 liter boiler can produce 590 liters of hot water per hour. Is it a lot or a little? The volume of the bath is on average 200 liters, that is, 3 baths of water can be drawn from one boiler. Of course, this is a simplified view. But he gives an understanding that there is no point in chasing large displacements and overpaying. And for 4 people, a boiler with a volume of 100–150 liters will be enough. For a large family or for those who often receive guests, a 200-liter boiler is more suitable.

Also, most often the consumer makes a choice according to the type of installation based on the existing boiler room (boiler room) and the organization of the internal space.

How is a direct heating boiler different from an indirect heating boiler?

In a direct fired boiler, water is heated directly by electricity or combustion gas.

In indirect water heaters, a heat exchanger (most often a coil) is installed in the water tank, through which the coolant flows from the boiler (thus water is heated). As a rule, the performance of indirect heating devices is higher than that of direct heating boilers. Accordingly, the user is not burdened with additional costs for electricity and gas and receives a higher level of comfort.

The disadvantages of indirect heating boilers are the need to prepare a room for installation of the system, slow heating after switching on and the high cost of the device itself and components.

What are the weakest points of boilers for heating water?

Boilers have practically no weak points. The most important thing is professional installation and regular maintenance according to the instruction manual.

What is the fundamental difference between floor and wall mounted boilers?

We will consider the answer using the example of wall-mounted boilers that can be mounted both vertically and horizontally. They have a flat shape with a depth of only 335 mm. It should be said that such boilers allow installation in any convenient place, which saves usable space and provides free access for equipment maintenance.

Lines of floor models, as a rule, do not have restrictions on displacement, which allows you to install boilers not only in private households, but also in any place where it is necessary to receive heated water.

The fundamental difference is in the space occupied in the room. Floor boilers occupy about 1.5–2 m2 according to their service area. Wall-mounted boiler occupies 3 times less area in the room.
