The dimensions of the countertop for the kitchen are selected taking into account the dimensions of the future headset. Width and length play a key role, because. these parameters determine the area of the working surface. For the convenience of cooking, it is desirable to install a large countertop. However, the dimensions of the room must also be taken into account. For a small kitchen, it is better to choose a compact countertop. The thickness and structure of the material — these parameters determine the degree of strength of the product, the service life. When choosing a suitable option, the type of material should be taken into account, because. in each case, the dimensions will be different.
Standard dimensions of the work surface for the kitchen
A wide range of countertops designed for installation in rooms of the same type of configuration greatly simplified the task of choosing. Not so long ago, a countertop surface with the following parameters was sufficient:
- length — 1000 mm;
- width — 600 mm;
- thickness — 28, 38 mm.
In former times, chipboard sheets were more often used. Accordingly, these dimensions were considered in relation to countertops of this type. With the advent of other materials and as a result of a more pronounced change in the configuration / size of the premises, work surfaces have also changed more.
Today, products of greater length (2400, 3050, 4100 mm) are popular. In this case, take into account the sink and hob, which should not protrude beyond the coating. The dimensions are the same, the thickness is set individually.
The standard height of the countertop in the kitchen from the floor depends on human height. Possible options:
- height is not more than 150 cm, then the height of the working cover should not exceed 76 cm;
- 150–160 cm — 82 cm;
- 170 cm — 88 cm;
- 170–180 cm — 91 cm;
- 190 cm — 94 cm;
- about 2 m — 1 m.
These sizes are recommended, so if desired and the need arises, you can choose another option. However, in this case, the usability of the product cannot be guaranteed. Using a lower tabletop or, conversely, a high analogue will lead to discomfort, in particular, the back may hurt when working in an uncomfortable position for a long time.
What should be considered when choosing a size?
Key parameters:
- type of material;
- installation method and type of fastening;
- dimensions;
- compliance of the selected material, shade and dimensions of the product with the general style of the interior;
- comfort during operation.
The material is the determining factor as may have a different structure. If you install a thin worktop, which is characterized by an insufficiently dense structure, for example, from wood-based boards, then the service life of the product will be short. The use of sheets of large thickness is also not always justified. So, you should not make a large-sized countertop if natural or artificial stone is used, because these varieties are characterized by increased strength, wear resistance and significant weight.
The type of fastening is also a determining parameter when choosing materials and sizes of floor pedestals. There are 2 options:
- installation on cabinets;
- wall mounting with brackets.
The use of the second option implies the need to use reliable countertops, because. in this case, one edge of the product will have a higher load. To speed up the repair process in the house, first consider the standard sizes of countertops for the kitchen. This option is suitable for rooms with a typical layout, for example, in apartment buildings. If the object is characterized by a large area, then the dimensions of the kitchen worktops are determined by personal preferences, because. in this case, nothing limits the user’s choice.

Kitchen countertop length
The value of this parameter varies significantly, which is affected by the type of material. The size range of coatings with standard dimensions includes the following options: 1000, 1260, 2460, 3050, 3500 and 4100 mm.
Width
For a headset in the kitchen, products are often ordered within 600 mm. This is the standard kitchen countertop width. But it is not necessary to stop at this option. It is necessary to take into account the dimensions of the room. For example, for a small kitchen, you can make a countertop up to 510 mm wide. For large rooms, large-sized options should be considered. In this case, the width of the tabletop sheet reaches 800 mm.
Thickness
Having mentioned the weight, one cannot fail to say a few words about the different thicknesses of kitchen worktops. There are several options, but in kitchens they mainly use moisture resistant ones with a thickness of 38 mm. However, there are also models with a thickness of up to 60 mm.
Acrylic countertops can vary considerably in front plank thickness, however a standard sheet of material is 12mm thick. To increase the thickness, plywood or chipboard is used — with their help, the countertop becomes more solid.
As for materials such as glass. Glass countertops vary greatly in thickness. For example, a glass dining table is typically about 8mm thick, while a glass worktop should be at least 16mm thick. In some models, the working surface is additionally reinforced with a substrate — for greater durability.
In a stone countertop, the thickness and depth parameters vary based on the purpose of this piece of furniture. Relatively thin models are suitable for use in the dining area. If the canvas is supposed to be used as a work surface, the countertop must be thick enough and durable, this will be the key to confident operation of the product for many years. However, it is not worth putting an equal sign between durability and thickness. Any, even the thickest table, is subject to mechanical deformation. So, for example, a worktop made of laminated canvas can easily be damaged, since the thickness of the plastic itself in it is only a few millimeters. Therefore, the headset should be used carefully.
Headset design
If you intend to independently draw up a project and assemble a kitchen set with your own hands, you need to know the standard sizes that are used in the manufacture of kitchen furniture:
- floor cabinets 860 mm
- cabinets 720 mm
- cabinet legs 100 mm
- countertops = 40 mm
This is important to consider, because when changing one parameter, it is necessary to change all the remaining ones. Self-ordering material for the manufacture of a kitchen set will be cheaper if you use standard sizes of kitchen cabinets. Thus, the contractor will not need to create a separate layout, but you can immediately start making furniture.
Taking measurements from the kitchen
The number of manipulations performed will depend on the configuration of the future headset. To get more accurate dimensions for the manufacture of kitchen furniture, perform the following measurements:
- Determine the distance between two opposite walls, you need to do this at 2–3 points.
- Get the size of the height of vertical structures (in several places).
- Determine the distance from the window opening to the floor / ceiling. In this case, the opening angle of the sash is taken into account.
- In the drawing, the headset is applied to the location of the sockets, the outlet of the pipeline.
- Sets the height of the kitchen worktop from the floor.

Standard sizes in different materials
If you choose the right work surface, you can help reduce the cost of the headset. It is also worth noting that the dimensions of the kitchen worktop depend on the manufacturer.
Products from the same material, but different brands can be characterized by different dimensions. The more massive the surface for floor pedestals is considered, the more expensive it will cost.

Plastic
Such products are chipboard or MDF boards coated with a polymer material. Standard sizes of a plastic table-top:
- thickness — 28, 38 mm;
- length varies from 2000 to 4000 mm;
- the width is most often 600 or 620 mm.
Wood
The thickness of a wooden table top is often 40 mm. The width can vary significantly from 600 to 1000 mm. It is advisable to choose the highest value of this parameter for large-sized premises. Moreover, a wide countertop for a corner kitchen set is not suitable. The length of the solid wood work surface often varies between 1000–3000 mm.
MDF, chipboard
Such products are laminated. Chipboard represents a group in a more affordable price category. Standard sheet sizes from this material:
- width — 600 mm;
- length — 3500 mm;
- thickness: 28, 38 mm.
It will not work to build up a chipboard tabletop because of the seam joints that form in this case. You can reduce the size. MDF countertops are more popular due to the absence of harmful components. The standard dimensions here are the same as in the case of chipboard. The minimum sheet length is 1000 mm.
Acrylic
The parameters of the acrylic countertops differ significantly from the dimensions of their counterparts. So, the average depth is 700–800 mm. The thickness of the sheet is 38 mm. The length can be different, the limit value of this parameter is 3000 mm. These are standard sizes, but there are a large number of other options, due to the production technology and the properties of the material in question. Using acrylic, you can make a countertop of any size.
A natural stone
Countertops made of natural marble and granite are suitable for large and spacious kitchens. This material is very strong and durable. The tabletop looks expensive and presentable. The most popular size is 4000x600 mm. Standards that come with a stone countertop:
- width — 60 cm;
- length — 75/80/240/300 cm;
- thickness — from 40 mm.
For countertops, granite or marble is most often used. Both materials are very durable, resistant to moisture and mechanical damage. Products are made to order.
In a regular store, you are unlikely to find ready-made countertops, so think about it in advance.
Stainless steel
The metal monolith looks beautiful in the kitchen. Shine gives the interior a zest, and using a stainless steel surface is safe for health. In addition, it is durable, resistant to metal damage, heat and moisture resistant.
Matte models are more practical in operation, since scratches are less noticeable on them.
The standard width is 600 mm, but there are specimens with a depth of 700 mm or more — they are in demand in professional kitchens of gastronomic establishments.
Quartz agglomerate
This is a suitable choice for organizing a kitchen island. The width of such countertops is from 1.24 m to 1.44 m. With their help, you can organize a functional workspace in the middle of a large kitchen with the possibility of inserting various household structures.
Note! Products made from the same materials, but from different manufacturers, may differ in size.
Narrow countertops for the kitchen — how to combine with a stove?
Most of this product passes between the hob and the sink. All built-in elements must match the width of the countertop. If there is not much space in the room, and the working surface is small in size, you should consider installing a stove with 2 burners. It is quite narrow and will fit freely even on a countertop with a minimum width.

In the case when you need to purchase a stove with 4 burners, it is recommended to choose from models with a sequential arrangement of burners. However, in this case, you need to calculate whether there is enough space for installing other equipment and pieces of furniture.
The option of mounting a stove with a small margin around the perimeter is allowed for consideration, but you should not purchase a hob whose dimensions exceed the width of the countertop.
Custom countertops
Standard is not always good. After all, this is an average option that does not take into account some features: the layout of the kitchen, human height, etc.
To manufacture a tabletop that differs significantly in size from the generally accepted parameters, you have to place an order for an individual project.
The following tips will help you consider important nuances when choosing this element.
Dimensions must match the area of the room
Soviet-built houses are distinguished by the area of kitchen rooms, which are much smaller compared to modern ones. Here it is worth thinking about reducing the width of the headset to a comfortable level, up to 30–40 cm.
In stores you can find a narrow, but deep and long sink and stove that fits the new dimensions.
For large rooms with an island kitchen, you can order a wide countertop. In classic interiors, it looks very elegant.
Consider planning
Depending on the layout (narrow, square, rectangular room), a frontal or corner arrangement is selected. For a small young family, you can extend the countertop to the bar.
Consider the individual characteristics and preferences of households
The level of the countertop above the floor will affect the convenience when cooking. Standard height — 85 cm.
Individual preferences and the expansion of kitchen space after redevelopment create many variations of non-standard solutions in the manufacture and installation of countertops.
Sometimes in a small kitchen you have to resort to non-standard solutions for the location of countertops.
Conventionally, these variations can be divided into the following categories:
Dimensional
In spacious kitchens, instead of standard meter-long countertops, more elongated counterparts have long been installed. Often, the countertop covers half of the kitchen around the perimeter, while skirting around the sink and other built-in elements.
In large kitchens, elongated countertops are often made.
Uniforms
The linear design of the kitchen set does not always fit the artsy interior style. In some cases, the waviness and roundness of the tabletops is determined by the individual preferences of the hostess.
In modern interiors, there are not only linear, but also rounded surfaces.
Divided
In the narrow space of small kitchens, you can find several countertops made of different materials. Each such place has its own functionality, designed for a specific type of work. For example, rough processing of products (beating meat, slicing) can be performed on a surface made of durable material, and assembly and aesthetic actions (decorating finished dishes) on a more fragile countertop.
In the same kitchen, you can find countertops made of different materials.
Dimensions for the corner kitchen
In the case of a corner kitchen set, you need to remember the need for the correct location of the seams. So, the connection of two plates in the area where the change of the direction of the working coating is carried out should be at an angle of 45 °. Joints are carefully sealed. If you plan to install an acrylic countertop, you can use a seamless surface.
Back
Further
This version of the working cover is distinguished by the possibility of changing the width when changing direction. The parameters of the product may be different, it all depends on the configuration of the room. If the kitchen is of standard dimensions, the previously discussed options for working surfaces are installed. In the case when the room has an unusual configuration, one part of the countertop may exceed the other in width by 10–20 cm or more.

The working cover for the corner set is selected according to the same parameters as for the linear version. However, in this case, it is recommended to consider such types of materials that are resistant to water. This is due to the need to install individual parts of the coating, which will lead to the formation of joints.
Ease of use
Finally, it is important to decide whether your kitchen will come out practical. Do you like everything about it, or maybe you should add some details or change the dimensions. It all depends on your taste and wishes. Remember that standard countertops are a much better option financially, but is it right for you? Such surfaces can be mounted, and if necessary, repaired independently. That is, you do not have to look for a specialist and spend money in vain.
A tabletop ordered according to your individual drawing is original and stylish. Nobody will definitely have this. You will enjoy every stay in the kitchen. But here the cost is most often very bites. Much of it depends on the material. Also, when installing a non-standard countertop, you will need to contact a specialist who will competently perform the installation, depending on the load distribution. Whichever option you choose, weigh the pros and cons and find what works for you. And the tips from our article will surely help you with this.
